Bellow you wil find a compreensive guide, step by step, to help you build a earthquake shelter house. It was designed for Haiti, but can be used anywhere in tropical parts of the world. This is a shelter for hot weather regions. Humanitarium Organizations (ONG, UN, Red Cross, and others) may get the cad plans upon request.

This is my contribution for the reconstruction of devastated areas in the world, that have the risck of earthquakes and hurricanes. The final result will be a ecological and resistant shelter, made from local materials. It was designed to be build with several choices of materials, not depending though of a selected material, with the aim to avoid transportation in big scales. The basic material in all cases will be earth (plain earth) in wich pants will grow. Their roots will than make a very STRONG and NATURAL cover for the shelter. Yes, this shelter is meant to be a final solution, as often happens in places like Haiti, where money is an issue.

For all the materials list and how to use them, please send me an email wtih Haiti in the title.

This is how it will look a refugee camp in the near future.

Now, how to build one of those shelters...

start by digging the land

Than make 8 (eight) arches with, wood, bambu, or other material.

Place the arches in 1 meter intervals. Use ropes to keep them vertical.

Place plastic over the arches, atached or glued to them. Re-use plastic bags if necessary.

Make 2 surfaces (wood or other) and opose them to the 1st and last arch.

Isolate all around with plastic (recicle plastic bags)

Than divide the inside spaces with wood or cloth frames, atached to the arches.

Place a tube for a chemeny (kitchen exaust) and cover the ground plastic with the available material for the ground. Wood or tiles, etc.

Now close the structure at both ends, like the image bellow, with the door and window fited.

You may than fill the hole with the sand or earth retrieved. And keep covering the shelter with it.

When you get to half (1/2) the height of the door (1 meter), place a suport arch in each end, as show in the picture bellow.

Than continue to cover all the way till the top.

With the remaing sand or earth, make a pile in the front and back of the shelter, this will protect from winds in those directions.

Finally, plant local vegetacion in the sides and tops of the shelter, choose the ones that have the strongest roots, as it's the roots that will provide the strong protection against hurricanes and earthquakes. Your shelter will grow stroner every year. And you can also make it more beautifull by planting flowers as well.

See it in video on youtube. There are 3 videos at all.
